Top of the Perch

Psalm 136

He sat on the top of the perch. At least in HIS mind he was higher than “all the rest.” He had asked to sit there. He WANTED to be up there. It was his earnest goal – at least for the moment -- my two year old -- on the kitchen bar stool.

He was completely satisfied -- until the cereal ran out. Suddenly, what he had wanted so badly became a trap. He was stuck. He couldn’t get down. What was he going to do?

There was no other way out. He had to call. Call loudly help! Call for mom, for dad, for ANYONE to help him “get down” from that terribly high place. He didn’t want to be there anymore! It was awful. The cereal was gone. His feet didn’t touch the floor. It was scary!

Ever been there? Even though we’re “all grown up?” The grass looked so much greener over there -- until we reached –“there.” The deal looked great -- until AFTER it was signed. The road looked smooth -- until it turned in a completely different way -- and we were left calling. Calling for Someone to rescue us from what we had wanted so badly.

In James 1:5, we are told, “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.” One day I was in my living room, my mind lamenting over some decision I wished had been made differently! So gently God reminded me of this verse. He remembered my frame and knew I was dust. He wasn’t glaring at me, reminding me of failures. He wasn’t making me feel like a “heel” because I needed His understanding and was longing for wisdom. He was mercifully holding out love and forgiveness, a treasure house full of wisdom for the asking, and a Hand to guide me from where I was to where I needed to go.

He is ever ready to hear our call for help. His eye sees ALL. And if we find ourselves at the “top of the perch” and can’t get down, HIS MERCY ENDURES FOREVER!

O, God. When I think I know what I want, help me to remember You know me better than myself. Keep me surrendered. Today, tomorrow, for always – my desire is to be full of Your wisdom.

Is It Morning Yet?

Isaiah 53
Have you ever had an aching heart – a weeping soul – a tear stained pillow . . . for more than two nights in a row? Sometimes, in situations like these, it comforts our hearts a little to know we are not alone. The roads that travel back through the ages of time have all had their sharp curves, their uphill climbs, and their breathtaking moments of beauty, as well as pain.

Remember – Jesus wept. Our greatest example of love is also known as a “Man of sorrows, acquainted with grief.” (Isaiah 53:3) Have the tear stains been caused by betrayal? Someone you loved deeply, trusted implicitly, never would have thought would hurt you . . . Jesus was betrayed . . . and not just once. When He left the Garden, the only ones who walked with Him were His enemies! All His “Friends” forsook Him and fled.

Perhaps the ache within is because of a “missing” and a “memory.” How could they trade worlds and leave us behind!? The longing just to share dinner together one more time – to smell their favorite cologne or perfume – to simply give them a hug . . .

Jesus wept at a graveside once. (And they weren’t smelling roses!) His response to death gives us hope through our heartache. When Christ called the dead man’s name – death couldn’t stay around. (John 11:43&44) Tomorrow, oh, yes – or maybe today – when the trumpet call comes, they too will rise to meet Him in the air. Oh, glorious morning!

Maybe your soul weeps for those who don’t know the love of God, or maybe for someone who knows about Him, but has never experienced the extreme joy of knowing Him personally and intimately. Maybe it’s family – maybe it’s friends. Or you may weep for the masses of people who have never heard . . .

Jesus wept over the lost – looking down over Jerusalem – longing to bring them to Himself. Weeping and praying for the lost shouldn’t be an exception for us as followers of Christ. His heartbeat should always be our heartbeat – people, people, people. They let us know that no matter how heavy our burden, how many our tears, how long our night – it won’t last forever! Found in Psalm 126 verses 5&6, it assures us, “Weeping may endure for the night, but joy comes in the morning!”

A few months back, I found myself sleeping the rest of my “physical night” on the couch in the living room. See, a “little invader” had climbed in our bed in the middle of the night, and the simplest solution was head to the couch! In the dim shadows of early morning, I heard my husband get up and make an effort at “quietly” awakening the children so they could get ready for school. As he came down the hallway, I heard the pitter patter of little feet close behind him. Then, in the most adorable, little, three year old voice, my son said, “Is it morning yet, Daddy?” Even in my sleepy state, my heart had a startling moment of realization. We are God’s children, knowing His delight, yet living in a fallen world. Sometimes, when the path home seems long, the road is hot and dusty beneath our weary feet, and our hearts bewildered, we look up and ask, “Is it morning yet, Father?” It’s exciting to know, if it isn’t, it soon will be. Remember His promise, Weeping for a night – joy in the morning. God keeps His Word!

Then, one day . . . think of it! One day we’ll ask Him for one last time, and morning will dawn. The road named “tomorrow” will be called “yesterday.” Tears will simply not exist, and God’s smile of forever will be stamped on our faces. No more sorrow, no more good-byes – no more pain, and no more night. Who knows, He might even answer with, “Yes, my child, its morning!”

Really Loving

John 15:9-17
She had a delightful laugh. Not the roaring chuckle that makes you have to laugh along, but the sweet little laugh that goes along with sparkling eyes and makes you feel warm and comfortable. Her gray hair with markings of silver was drawn back from her face, and she always had time for a little girl.

Her patience surely must have been strengthened from all the times I got into her purse when I was between the ages of one and three – but by the time I had grown to eight or so, she was writing in my “autograph book,” these words; “My day is complete, I have heard you laugh.”

Mrs. Greathouse loved plants. My childish heart loved them too – or so I thought. I loved the green willowy wisps of the “air plant,” the tender pointed leaves of the ivy, the stronger leaves of the plant passed down to mom from grandma . . . they were so pretty. However, my childish love only ran so deep. On one occasion I was expressing to Mrs. Greathouse how I just “LOVED” plants, but could not remember to water them. She just gave her delightful laugh, looked at me with a shake of her head and said, “You don’t really love them then.”

I smile at the memory. She was so right. If I had really loved those plants, remembering to water them would have been a priority in my day. What we love finds a way to surface.

Jesus tells us in John 15: 9-11, “As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father’s commands and remain in his love. I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.”

Really loving Jesus shows by our living. Following His directives to love Him with all of our heart, soul, mind, body, strength – following His command to love our neighbor as ourselves -- this is the test of our love, the depth of our obedience.

When pleasing Him first means most, He is our “first love.”

Father, perfect our love of You! Let us give you more than “lip service” but have a love for You that’s pure, resulting in joyful obedience!

Snapshots

Isaiah 42:5-7
“Say cheese!” “Cheese!” Snap goes the camera – and everyone gathers around. “Were my eyes closed?” “Could you see the baby?” “Did I look . . .” (fill in the blank ladies!:-)

Seems like life brings us lots of occasions for "shapshots." Birthdays, vacations, pictures, video clips . . . our family has taken quite a few, and shared a lot of laughs in the process. Some of us work at getting the “angle just right” – try and make sure the background view will “compliment” our picture . . . while others of us just “point and shoot!” Whatever the results are, one thing is certain, when we take a moment to look at them later we have lots of memories.

During one of our travels, I was visiting with a good friend. Her first husband was a great lover of sports – especially when it came to kids and grandkids. A few years ago, he passed away with cancer. Their pastor at the time told the children that although they couldn’t talk right to their grandpa now, they could tell Jesus whatever they wanted their “Pa” to know. Then, if Jesus thought it was important enough, he would pass the message on.

A few weeks later, the family was at a baseball game. The video camera was rolling – and caught an awesome play by one of the grandchildren. Later, when the parents were watching it, they caught a bit of conversation between the children that went something like this. “Sure hope Jesus has a video camera,” said one. “Why’s that?” asked another. “Cause ‘Pa’ would really want to see that play!”

Interesting thought isn’t it? Heaven recording the events of our lives! In I Chronicles 16:9 we are told, “For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose heart is loyal to Him.” Psalm 34:15 gives us the wonderful promise, “The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and His ears are open to their cry.” It’s really true! The eyes of the Lord are on us – and He doesn’t even need a recording device.

When you gave a smile to a stranger with a frown – great snapshot - He saw you! When you held your tongue instead of replying with that hasty remark – awesome video clip --He knew. When you offered up a prayer for that person who had betrayed and hurt you so deeply – just a private thing not even recorded -- He heard. When you asked forgiveness -- for whatever the reason – He gladly forgave.

Oh, yes, He has an “all seeing” eye. He sees and knows the evil along with the good – but His desire is for “good snapshots!” He looks for “loyal hearts” – delights in those who seek Him with their whole heart. He smiles when “the flash” reveals those walking after His Spirit and living in His will. Psalm 18:19 says, “He also brought me out into a broad place; He delivered me because He delighted in me.”

Keep making God smile – you’re on “candid camera!”

Take it with you!
The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and His ears are open to their cry.” Psalm 34:15

It's In The Song

Scripture: Isaiah 42:10-12

Perhaps you heard it on the radio, watched it on a DVD, or sang it along with others at your place of worship. Maybe you belted it out in the shower, or taught it to your child – or, maybe you just quietly sang it to God – as you worshipped Him alone. Whenever it touched your mind your heart – you knew, there was power in the song.

Music is an awesome gift from God. He uses it to communicate to us in so many ways. One of the most beautiful verses in the word is Zephaniah 3:17, “The Lord your God in your midst, the Mighty One, will save; He will rejoice over you with gladness, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing.”! God, singing over his children! That is beautiful.

One of my dearest friends had come to help me move. Moving in itself is quite a chore, but the emotional ties that would now be miles a part were causing some heart aching moments. All through the day I could hear my friend – singing! Softly, but singing just the same. It wasn’t until later it dawned on me. That is how she was making it through those difficult moments. Her heart was holding steady by the power of the song.

Did you know our future is even revealed in a song? Oh, yes! The song of the redeemed! We who know Him must sing it now – so we can sing it then! Sing out the song – His blood still cleanses from all sin! Sing out the song – there is power in the name of Jesus! Sing out the song – to all who are hurting, and lonely, and lost – Jesus has healing, comfort, and forgiveness! Sing out the song – the song of the marvelous, matchless, love of God!

Sing it loud – sing it soft – or anywhere in between -- but sing it!

That They May Know You

Scripture: I Samuel 17:45-47

Here comes David. Young David – but not too young to be faithful. Armorless David – yet armed with the armor that matters most – the strength of the Lord. Here he comes. Through the dry book, picking carefully his stones. Purposefully placing himself face to face with a literal giant in the land.

Why? What was the motivation behind this shepherd’s boy decision? Did he care so little for his life that he would carelessly throw it away to a pagan?

Oh, no. It wasn’t like that at all. David had seen God’s deliverance before in his life. He was well aware of Divine intervention. He had known God’s Presence as he wrote his songs. He had a heart patterned after God’s own heart. He had a reason, a passion for living. The line of his faith and the allegiance to His God had been crossed. Goliath could not continue to defy the armies of the living God!

Standing out boldly in his answer to this Philistine’s mocking and disdain of him is the reason for his bravery. A purpose much bigger than himself. “. . . that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel” I Samuel 1:46b

David faced down the false accusations of his brother, Eliab who accused him of pride and insolence of heart. (v.28) He asks the question of him, “. . . is there not a cause?” (V. 29)

He faced down the temptation to accept the armor of King Saul Himself! Wouldn’t a proud person have strutted around, thinking of his grand exaltation wearing royal fighting gear. Not David. The purpose He was fighting for left no room for exalting self.

He faced down the taunts of the Philistine giant himself. He recognized each piece of his warfare – and its incapability’s glared in the sunlight in comparison to Who he came armed with. “. . . I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel whom you have denied.”(v.45)

He was a young man with his faith vision clear. All must know the God of Israel. This God is our God! Make Him known!

Untested Armor

Scripture: I Samuel 17:38-40

Have you ever heard anyone say, “My, they have wisdom beyond their years?”

If they say it now, surely there must have been a similar phrase in Bible times. People were people then, too. If an older, wiser person was hanging around when David was given Saul’s armor, they must have used that phrase then.

He wasn’t enamored by whose it was. He wasn’t impressed with its size. He certainly wasn’t about to enter this warfare with untested armor!

The stakes were too high. The honor and name of God were on the line. He knew Who he depended on to win, and he recognized that as His servant – His soldier – He had to be correctly armed.

He was familiar with his shepherd’s staff. He knew how to use it. The slingshot didn’t look too fancy, but He it had served him well. He knew the kinds of stones he needed – that came from practice.

His confidence rested solely in the One who would fight for him, yet he knew the secret of putting to use what God had given him, and giving his very best in the battle. With an obedient heart and a love for His God he surrendered himself and the use of what he knew into the Mighty Hand of God.

His act of faith brought the blessing of God as He turned those simple weapons into armor mightier than Saul’s ever could have been.

What has God placed within your hand? Perhaps it seems so simple, not at all fancy – and you wonder could this be used at all? Don’t wonder. Surrender. What has God placed within your heart? A vision so large it looms on your horizon, humanly impossible, but God ordained? Surrender. Purpose to do your best, and get to work.

All kinds of soldiers hid behind their excuses as they camped out and listened for the next day’s threat. He was too big. What if they failed?

David placed His trust in the One who could, and took into battle what God had given him.

Whatever He has given you, develop it. Use it. Learn it well.

Give it your very best. . . Give Him your absolute all.

Nobody Was Watching

Scripture: I Samuel 17:30-37

How many times have we heard the words, “God has a plan – God has a purpose?” We say it to someone in crises. We hear it preached and read it often. We dare not become calloused to the words – desensitized to the largeness of its meaning.

If we do, WHAT we do seems to have fewer consequences – just as long as nobody is watching. However, it’s what we do in the “dark” that makes us who we are in the “light.”

God does have a plan. We don’t manipulate to be a part of it. We don’t control its path if it’s truly of Him. We don’t scheme to “make our way” or trust in our ability to “do it just right” in order to gain the acceptance His acceptance.

It was God’s plan for David to be anointed King of Israel. The Prophet Samuel was God’s chosen vessel to anoint this new King. He didn’t immediately know who God was choosing. He knew where to go, knew the family to choose from, but He had to listen closely to know God’s plan.

David didn’t even know he was there. He was simply obeying what he had been given to do. He was doing what He was supposed to be doing even when nobody was watching.

When the family finally called him, no one could believe it! David was part of God’s plan! He smallest. The least. The youngest. He didn’t plan it, or “work his way to the top.” He simply was being obedient – and God had chosen him.

When that anointing ceremony was over – where is David sent? Back to the usual job he has been given – shepherding the sheep. God’s plan was in motion, and while David waiting for it to be carried out, he was faithful in obedience where he was.

In the middle of that faithful serving, God again proved Himself faithful. Nobody was watching – not at the time. Yet faithfully as David did his job and protected the sheep, God faithfully protected His servant. This deliverance produced a greater faith in the heart of David so he would be ready to trust for bigger things in the days ahead.

How could one young boy possess the courage of no other Israelite soldier? How could he take down a Philistine giant with the armies of Israel watching? He took down the lion and the bear when no one knew. He knew the Source of the power of His deliverance – the LORD! He trusted him at all times.

The TRUTH of the Matter

Psalm 51:1-10 (6)

"Surely, You desire truth in the inner parts; you teach me wisdom in the inmost place" (Psalm 51:6).

It was an ordinary school day. Attending a Christian Day School afforded me the privilege of “chapel” times, and Bible classes. The years have clouded my certainty on exactly which one it was, but I clearly remember the room on the first floor of that school building where we children gathered. An ordinary teacher began to teach -- but an extra ordinary God anointed her lesson and these many years later it is vivid in my mind!

See, the red, heart-shaped box of chocolates looked soooooo inviting! Mmmm, I loved chocolate. We were surely going to get a piece of that wonderful candy. My little girl heart was skipping with excitement! I could hardly wait.

Then, the time came. The teacher opened the box. What had looked so beautiful on the outside was completely empty on the inside! No candy at all. You can be sure, I was bitterly disappointed. That object lesson imprinted itself on my mind VERY DEEPLY! And . . . on the way out the door, she was kind enough to give us a treat of some kind.

What IS on the inside of us? Oh, most of us look good on the outside. We take care to comb our hair, brush our teeth, dress attractively -- but what truly motivates us to do what we do? What thoughts do we choose to keep in the “think tank?” Who holds the key to our heart? Who is in possession of our very lives, our minds, our souls, our bodies?

In the innermost part of our being, God desires TRUTH! The Truth of who HE IS. The Truth of who WE ARE before Him. Then, in our humble, honest, seeking moments, we can find that He, the Truth will set us free. He doesn't "shy away "from our "awfulness" but brings the only answer to the sin problem we possess -- forgiveness and cleansing. He doesn't abandon us in our weakness but brings to us and liberally gives His strength and wisdom.

He is the Way, the TRUTH, and the life. Possessing Him within brings ultimate Truth. He brings to us the inner help we need to continue becoming molded into the image and likeness of Himself.

Everlasting Love

Hosea 14:9

God’s chosen people weren’t always that “lovable!” God called them “stiff-necked, and “rebellious” when they turned their back on him and went after other god’s. Again, and again, he forgave, he restored, why? He loved them with an everlasting love.
Probably no story in scripture shows more descriptively the love of God for the wanderer than that of Hosea and Gomer. Hosea pulls Gomer out of her life as a prostitute and into his arms. He allows her to see what TRUE LOVE really is like. Yet, over and over, she is unfaithful! She looks everywhere else – but Hosea is faithful. Faithful to the point that even when she became a slave, he bought her back! Bought back her freedom for fifteen pieces of silver – half the price of a going slave. Hosea obeyed God – for God wanted him to take her back as a symbol of His own everlasting love for Israel.
Hosea must have appeared to be a fool to the townspeople. One source I read said, “A prophet called to speak for God to the people often paid a high price to understand God’s heart.” God’s arms are open to us, too, and His love is everlasting! Deuteronomy 33:27 says, “The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms . . .” Whatever we’ve done or not done, however “low” we have gotten, there is a way back! There are arms to run to! Arms of everlasting love.
Did you know that our emotions do not control or affect God’s love for us? It’s amazing to look into scripture and find out that God’s chosen people were honestly still people! We find them weeping, (II Kings 20:3) at times complaining, (in the wilderness) fearing, (Nehemiah 4:6) hiding (I Kings 17:1-7), running, (Jonah 1:3) doubting, (Thomas, John 20:24-29) repenting, (Peter) believing, (Mary) and through it all we find GOD LOVING! Not one time in scripture have I ever found that God stopped loving. He may have been “angry for a moment,” or had to replace a disobedient servant with an obedient one, but He never stopped loving. His love is everlasting! So, whether we are weeping, complaining, fearing, hiding, running, doubting, repenting, believing, WHATEVER our emotions are at the moment – GOD LOVES US! Yes, He loves You! Yes, He loves me! Even when we don’t understand. Especially when we ache inside with seemingly unbearable pain – He loves us. He wants to help us with our emotions. He doesn’t want to “put us down.” He wants to “lift us up!” And He is so patient so show us the way!

Short Cut

Psalm 119:25-32

"I have chosen the way of Truth; Your judgments I have laid before me." Psalm 119:30

To say the day was "busy" would have been an understatement at best. In the midst of this demanding schedule, I was suddenly off on a very important "dual" mission! Pick up the children from school, and get the baby from the babysitters. The problem was, distance to both seemed too far for the schedule I “HAD” to meet, and they certainly weren’t right beside each other!

Even though we hadn’t lived in this area real long, I knew the way to school, and I knew the way to the baby sitters. However, on the way to school, I came to a stop light and "thought" that if I turned left, that would be a "short cut" to the road that would take me to the babysitter. I didn't "know" for sure, but I "thought" this would save me time – and I desperately needed any extra minute I could find.

It wasn't long after this decision I began to realize I was in real trouble. I was zig zagging through the countryside, flying around curves, not at all sure where I was, but hoping against hope I would end up on the right path. I came to another crossroads, and very decidedly, I made a left. Now I was fairly confident I was headed in the right direction. Wrong.

At the end of the “time saving shortcut,” I ended up miles from where I needed to be, and farther away than when I had started! I had made a complete circle and was actually beyond my house – which had been my starting point. As I went "flying by" my house -- which I had left 30 minutes earlier -- I honked and waved at my bewildered husband and father-in-law who were in the yard. When I finally reached my destination, you can be sure I was determined (at least at that moment) to never take another "shortcut!"

Staying on the right path takes daily choices to walk in His Truth. Walking in the Light of His Word, hearing His call, obeying His voice -- these may take you on a faith walk into "unfamiliar territory” but not on an "unknown shortcut!"

A Shining Vessel

Romans 12:1-8
“You know, I would really like to help, but I’m just not as good as Margaret was,” the voice said quietly.
“She just had a real way to do these things, Pastor. She had such a personality . . . and her smile just wouldn’t quit.”
Pastor nodded his head. “Yes, Margaret was a very special lady . . . but she’s gone now. We need someone to keep filling her place and doing this job in the building of the Kingdom.”
“I’m just not as good as she was. I can’t possibly do things the way she did them. I’m doing my best, but it isn’t as good as her best.”
“Let me ask you a question,” said the Pastor. “Do you know the Lord?”
   “Why, certainly Pastor.”
“And you’re doing your best for Him.”
   “Yes, Pastor.”
“Do you believe He is capable of working through you?”
   “Of course I do, Pastor.”
“Remember, HER best isn’t YOUR best! When HIS GLORY shines – any vessel becomes glorious. The vessel becomes more than it’s capable of being, because of WHO saturates it. Will you let Him shine through you, while you partner with Him in doing the work?
She dropped her head -- and then, the truth penetrated her heart. She hadn’t really thought about it like this before. “Yes!” She answered. “I will be the vessel, and let His glory work through me!”

The past is past, the present is here
The future is “God owned”.
So I will be my very best,
And let the Master do the rest.

The past is past, the present is here
The future is “God owned.”
And so I will surrendered be
To let YOUR GLORY shine
Through me.

Commissioned - Exodus 3:13-20 (15)

The line was long. The uniforms spotless -- and stately the men & women who waited their turn. Each received their honors or orders with dignity. Commissioned -- sent forth -- to bravely defend the people of their country.

The line is long. It begins when time itself found the starting line. It spans the spacious ages, and boldly walks into today. It stretches forward into the yet unknown – facing it with faith.

This line is made up of a different sort of people. A people sent forth by God Himself to carry forth His Word – to display the very image of Him Son to their generation. Each possess a unique and individual difference given them within their person – evidenced in something as simple as a thumbprint -- yet each carry the same burning passion within their hearts.

A passion to know God -- to know who He really is. A passion to know His Word. A passion to pass this knowledge and their ever growing thirst of Him to their children and those around them.

Moses found himself within this commissioned line of people. God commissioned him to lead his people out of bondage. Notice -- God's commissioning did not come without His enabling. By His very name, He assures Moses that he will not go alone. "And God said to Moses, 'I AM WHO I AM.' And He said, 'Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, 'I AM has sent me to you.'" Ex. 3:14

Commissioned by God also brings His companionship for the journey ahead. With Him comes all the power needed for the task!

Commissioned! Not to walk this path alone -- But walk beside the One who gives the song.

Commissioned! Not to singly keep my self aloof -- But share with others Power of an empty tomb.

Commissioned! To simply cease to be -- And let Him live His live through me.

Commissioned! To know Him in His fullness – I determine to seek the precious Presence of His Person, and humbly, but resolutely, take my place in line.

We Did It!

Proverbs 4:11-13

“Come on, Daddy” the little voice called, “come on.” Saturday morning had arrived, and Daddy had taken two of his sons for the morning. One had baseball practice, the other one was nearly three. He needed to play, and play, and play. So, off to the playground at the park they went.

This was the life. A bright, sunny morning, playing with Dad. Happily their voices called to one another, mixed with joyous laughter . . . Until it was time for the “fort.”

He started just fine. . . His little legs moving higher, then higher. About half way up his perspective changed! This wasn’t as much fun. The ground looked so far down and the top looked so far up. How would he ever make it? He didn’t contemplate for long. He knew what he could do, he would call on Dad.

“Daddy, come help, daddy, come help.” Quickly Daddy went to his side.

“You’re ok;” he reassured him, “just put your foot, here. Good job! Now put you’re foot here. That’s great!” With Daddy’s presence beside him, and obediently following his instructions, little guy was soon at the very top.

His voice was exuberant once again. “We did it!” He yelled happily, “we did it!”

Has life ever left you feeling like your on an upward climb that’s simply too much? The future stretches endlessly before you. The past seems separated, yet ever catching up. You’re not sure where to place your foot. Every where you see to take the next step seems so unstable. Call on your Father! Your Heavenly Father has not abandoned you. He will come to your aid. Let Him quiet your heart and mind. Listen closely and He’ll say, “Put your foot here. This is the step to take.” And with His guidance someday we’ll take the final step and reach “the top” -- Heaven’s shore. Placing our hand in His nail-scarred hand, looking into His beautiful face we can shout, “We did it!”

Oh, God, help me to know the guidance of Your Shepherd’s hand. Grant me the wisdom that comes from You. Keep me close enough to readily recognize and listen to Your voice. Help me to follow, allowing my steps to be ordered by you. (Psalms)

Can't Pay

John 3:1-21

It was yard sale day. Time for the “old” to become “new” in someone else’s possession. The cars rolled in and before long the yard was dotted with people I had never met, coming to find a bargain.

What they found as bargains was quite interesting! Sometime through the day a little boy stood in front of me. He was so cute standing there, looking expectantly up at me. How much was this yard sale toy he had his heart set on?

“Do you have a quarter?” I asked, smiling. Then came the answer. Without hesitation, quick and concise, “No.” He didn’t have to search his pockets, or take a guess – not even for one minute! He most likely didn’t have a dime, not alone a quarter.

The adults in the yard laughed at the answer, but Grandpa quickly came up beside him, handing me his quarter. You see, he didn’t have what it took to buy what he needed. He needed Grandpa to help him out. Grandpa, was not only able, he was more than willing.

Guess what? We don’t have enough to buy what we need either. Guess what else? We could NEVER have enough. That’s why we needed a Savior.

“You need forgiveness . . . where’s your payment . . . Satan smirks as he asks.”

The desperate search within begins. How can we pay this debt? How can we break sins chains that bind us, be free from the guilt that grips us, find and answer to the emptiness within us? In one horrifying moment the truth dawns upon our consciousness. We can’t pay.

Then, just as quickly, the glorious moment of truth brings with it a ray of light brighter than the brightest sun. Jesus steps in. No amount of money, no amount of good works, no amount or trying to pay on our own can ever be enough.

He bought us with the price of His own life blood. Now, He holds out one nail scarred hand as proof and takes my hand in His other. Forgiven!

The gift is there for all of us – the gift of salvation, bringing eternal life. All we have to do is believe on Jesus, repent and receive His gift.

Can’t pay? He already did!

Work or Wonder?

Matthew 26:6-13

It was around 5:30 a.m. Stumbling through the dim light of the living room I vaguely “viewed” two shadowy figures! No, it wasn’t burglars this November morning, it was my two older sons, at this time ages 10 and 12. The table was completely set -- thankfully no coffee brewing! I convinced them to go back to bed for at least little while as Dad wasn’t ready to get up yet! See, it was Dad’s birthday. My 10 year old was CONVINCED that HE was making him a wonderful breakfast. Eggs . . . eggs . . . eggs. . . . and the whole works.

He went to bed -- for awhile. Then he was up again. By this time I was endeavoring to have my quiet time. He waited patiently - as patiently as an anxious 10 year old could wait. Finally, I made it to the kitchen to help with the preparations of this wonderful event.

And . . . it was wonderful . . . until it was over. GRRR! There were the dishes to be done, the kitchen to be cleaned. I started to bark my proverbial motherly orders (did I sound like the Proverbs 31 woman? HMMMM!) Then, it hit me. Who cared about the mess? It depended on how I “viewed it!” My 10 year old viewed it all with wonder. The wonder of pleasing dad, of giving him the best he could -- and it pleased his father. Now, I could share in the wonder, or grumble at the work.

Can’t help but think of Mary anointing the feet of our Lord. What wonder as she worshiped at His feet? The disciples only saw the money . . . “the work” they could do for the poor, what an excuse! Did Simon see the work? Did any of the oil spill over on to the floor? Was there “work” in cleaning it up? Even if there was, what wonder! The smell must have lasted for days; the wonder of her giving her best has lasted for decades and will last for eternity.

Oh, God. Sometimes in the busyness of my days I forget to view the wonder. All I see is work! Wipe off the lens of my glasses, adjust my binoculars, help me see beyond the obvious, and view with wonder the truly important. Let my vision be Yours.

Take It With You!

The Wind of the Spirit

Galatians 5:16-25
As a married couple, making each other a priority takes will power – plus a decision to do so on purpose! Most of us wouldn’t want it any other way, after all we love each other, but life gets busy, demands are many, and before you know it, the legitimate has overrun the most important and left you with an empty handful of things to do.
It was my husband’s “day off.” Sure, there were a million and one things we could have done, but we chose, on purpose, to make a date of this day and head for the Blue Ridge Mountains, not far from our home.
It was the fall of the year, and birds were headed south. When we got up into the mountains, we kept seeing these men off to the side of the road with gigantic binoculars, looking out over the various, magnificent valleys. Some of them even had tri-pods supporting their prized equipment.
My husband had seen them before, so he had a little bit of an idea what they were doing. They were “bird-watchers!” Someone had even tracked 1,800 birds in one day! We strained our eyes to catch a glimpse of what they were trying to tell us. We learned so much. But it wasn’t until they gave us a chance to look through their lens we could see what they were talking about. It was absolutely amazing! Without those binoculars, it looked like the normal blue sky – gorgeous valley view. Looking through them, we were made aware that there were all kinds of things happening in that sky!
“They’re really flapping today,” one of them commented. “They’ll never make it if they do that all the way south.” We must have looked like the novices we are – for they went on to explain. When a bird came into the valley, usually he was caught up in a particular air current. This current carried him along, making it possible for him to glide through the valley without flapping his wings.
The Holy Spirit had an object lesson for me. So gently He whispered into my spirit. My desire intensified – and stays strong until this day! “Lord, let me live IN You and be carried by the wind of the Spirit, never flapping around in the flesh!”

The Wonder of His Presence

How do we forget so soon the wonder of His presence?
That frees us from life’s binding, strong cocoon.
How can we trade so quickly -- His fingerprints upon our souls
And turn them in for selfish wants that soon will fade?

How can we so soon forget what true love really means?
That love seen its truest form
Was God-man hung between two thieves. . .

O, God, I choose to not forget the marks left by Your presence
But to draw up close, and let your love begin again in me.
