Untested Armor

Scripture: I Samuel 17:38-40

Have you ever heard anyone say, “My, they have wisdom beyond their years?”

If they say it now, surely there must have been a similar phrase in Bible times. People were people then, too. If an older, wiser person was hanging around when David was given Saul’s armor, they must have used that phrase then.

He wasn’t enamored by whose it was. He wasn’t impressed with its size. He certainly wasn’t about to enter this warfare with untested armor!

The stakes were too high. The honor and name of God were on the line. He knew Who he depended on to win, and he recognized that as His servant – His soldier – He had to be correctly armed.

He was familiar with his shepherd’s staff. He knew how to use it. The slingshot didn’t look too fancy, but He it had served him well. He knew the kinds of stones he needed – that came from practice.

His confidence rested solely in the One who would fight for him, yet he knew the secret of putting to use what God had given him, and giving his very best in the battle. With an obedient heart and a love for His God he surrendered himself and the use of what he knew into the Mighty Hand of God.

His act of faith brought the blessing of God as He turned those simple weapons into armor mightier than Saul’s ever could have been.

What has God placed within your hand? Perhaps it seems so simple, not at all fancy – and you wonder could this be used at all? Don’t wonder. Surrender. What has God placed within your heart? A vision so large it looms on your horizon, humanly impossible, but God ordained? Surrender. Purpose to do your best, and get to work.

All kinds of soldiers hid behind their excuses as they camped out and listened for the next day’s threat. He was too big. What if they failed?

David placed His trust in the One who could, and took into battle what God had given him.

Whatever He has given you, develop it. Use it. Learn it well.

Give it your very best. . . Give Him your absolute all.
